Day of remembrance

1 Every year, the "day of remembrance for deceased drug addicts" is held in many towns across Germany as a national day of action.

1Gedenktag für verstorbene Drogenabhängige

1 A Day of Remembrance, announced by the "Landesverband der Eltern und Angehörigen für humane und akzeptierende Drogenarbeit NRW e. V." ("National Association of Parents and Families for Humane and Accepting Drug Work in NRW"), was held for the first time at the "Memorial for Deceased Drug Addicts" in Gladbeck on 21 July 1998. This place of remembrance and warning was created by a mother for her dead son in 1994.

1 Every year, the Düsseldorfer Drogenhilfe e. V. and AIDS-Hilfe Düsseldorf e. V. invite people to remember those who have died as a result of their drug addiction in Düsseldorf over the course of the year. People do not live in isolation. Their deaths affect and change a lot in the lives of those who were close to them and knew them.

1 Several of the people who died were part of the everyday life of our social facilities - some of them for years - and we replacedthe home they had lost. We know very little of the lives of other people because they preferred to keep themselves to themselves.

1 This day gives us the opportunity to say goodbye to them and to share memories. Family members, drug addicts, colleagues from addiction assistance facilities and associated fields of work, friends and all interested parties are invited to come to the event.

1 The organisations responsible for planning and carrying out this event are the Drogenhilfe e. V. and the AIDS-Hilfe Düsseldorf e. V. Contact Jutta Eisenhauer-Jarju, telephone: 0211 8923 912.
